In a few month I'm planning to take my family to visit our motherland of Laos and Luang Prabang are our main objective during this coming trips. In the past five years I've been taken my family to Vientiene during many important cultural activities but didn't have luxury to travel farther than Vang Vieng. Since Luang Prabang going to be our new experience and I believe advice is needed from some who have travel or live there before...
Luang Prabang is a dreamy place and weather is cool on most days. Take the night trip from Vientiane. That way, you shall arrive in Luang Prabang in the early morning when the clouds hang low, and you are ushered into a dreamy entry as your vehicle winds its way to the city.
Also, witness the spectacle of the parade of the monks that start as early as 5:30AM along Sisavangvong Road. Don't forget to climb up Chomsy Hills for the spectacular view of the whole city, the sprawl of Luang Prabang including the sinewy confluence of the two rivers. The night market is also a fun experience, although most shops will have closed by 9-10PM (curfew). There are so much more to do in Luang Prabang, but I am sure you will enjoy this "sleepy' city as much as I did!
Hire a bicycle to wander around the city and cross over to the other side of Khan river. Don't forget to visit Kuangsi water and swim in crystal clear water. After alms giving in the morning, visit a morning market and try out local food. And if you have time to spare, a day trip to Tham Ting cave (Buddha cave) is nice as well. I have been to Luang Prabang many times but have not had a chance to ride an elephant at Tad Se (I think) water fall.

ok from my experience i rent a mini van from vte to lpb, riding on the mountain rood is very scary, when i came back i had to take an airplane if you and your family think will be ok to ride on the mountain rood then you might be ok but the city very nice i love it.
Thai people wont write these confusing grammar and wont write so very formal words like that. You are using Google translate, don't you? hahaha.. what a funny!

forget the expensive restaurants along the main road and prefer have lunch/diner in small "open air" restaurants along the river
very low price, generaly good food (but not always... be careful), peacefull and beautifull places.
I love this place... i just regret it's becoming an expensive place : center city is so small and there are more and more tourist.. this mean quietness lower and price rise every year. sad... but Luangprabang remain a wonderfull place.
if you can find a good guesthouse in the center city and stay 4-5 days, thats perfect... but for my part, i wonder if i would not love to live there (at least a few months/year)
