Laos enters final round in WTO accession negotiations .

Vientiane - Communist Laos has entered the final round of negotiations to enter the World Trade Organization (WTO), state media reported Friday. The process, which has been ongoing for 13 years, was set to accelerate in the coming year, the report said.
"Laos is in the final round of negotiations for WTO accession," Lao Minister of Industry and Commerce Nam Vinhaket told a conference on the WTO held in Vientiane this week.
The minister said Laos still needed to address questions regarding its service sector before entry was possible, the Vientiane Times reported.
"It is important to improve our laws not only for WTO but for ourselves, to integrate our economy into the international trade systems," he said.
Nam noted that it took China 15 years before gaining WTO membership in 2001, while after 13 years of talks Laos is already not far from its goal.
"This year, we will step up our negotiations for WTO accession," Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongloun Sisoulith told the same conference. "We need to do many things, we need to be more active and responsible to accelerate our work."
Laos, under communist rule since 1975, has opened up the economy to foreign trade and private investment since 1987.

Wow!  It's taking that long to reach a second round - 13 years?  The work load in WTO must be that high, they need to hire more staff.

When Laos become the member of WTO . Then a lot of the investors  from the free world community are trust and rest risk of their money so there will be more confident in the Lao government for a lot of investors and the bank who are the members of WTO will invest in Laos. The most import than that the WTO want is the human being right . It will take longer it Laos will not comply with their demands. Cambodia was worst than Laos when there was the Cambodia killing field but Cambodia had stopped and changed and complyed to all agreements with the world community so do Vietnam.

Human being right is the key. There are many members of WTO complain about that issue. Something else is could be fit and resolve.

China's human rights records were, and still are, atrocious yet it was accepted to WTO.  Maybe he was talking about the needs to improve business and investment law.

China is not Laos and have a lot of cheap labors and plenty of natural resources and raw martial to feed the industry that the world need and China were the member of WTO for many decades when the US stops economy sanction against China before the human being became the big issue after the tiananmen square and move 60 % of American factories in China and Mexico because of cheap labors and avoid to pay more tax , work comp , medical benefit and pension and save trillion of dollars. What does Laos have to lose if  Laos comply with WTO demand but benefit ?

Saved trillions of dollars?  That was very unwise of the US.  Look at now more and more factories in the US are closed with millions of workers lost their jobs.  Also China is rivaling the US to be next world super power.

Well , those millionaires are running the world so do the world bank are owned by the American billionaires. Money is God my friend and life is never fair . The world is beautiful for the one who are rich and the world is hell to the poor. So it happen that those billionaires are living in the free country (United States ) so they have the right to do what they please a with their monies and factories. As long as China provide them with cheap slavery labors , they will continue to make more profit and live well on the other hard working and cheap products.

Just comply with the WTO demand why the government have to wait to long to do so. Human being right that what WTO communities need the government to be fair to the people and not to take their land and their farm away  and treat the people as human being  why it is so hard to do.

It's not about human rights at all.  Half the countries in the world have dismal human rights records anyway.  Look at China and Vietnam, they've been and still are arresting anyone with the voices of dissent, peace activists, etc....

It's all about the rule of law, the law that is clearly written down in concrete that will protect foreign investments.

That is none sense Laos' law as good as Vietnam and Cambodia's law .Matter of fact Laos' law protected the foreign investors more and more freedom than Cambodian and Vietnamese laws by allowing the foreign investors to hire who ever they want unlike the Cambodia and Vietnam that the foreign companies must hire their citizen first before bringing the foreign workers. Human being right and corruptions are the main issues that WTO are demanding. Could not compare to China when China is the big powerful country with 1.3 billion cheap labors force and a lot of raw martial  and also when the Unites States stopped economy sanction against China , the human being right was not focus in the media until tiananmen square massacre than a lot of country tried against China but the United States have invested billion of dollars and about 60 % of American factories were moved to China and Mexico to avoid paying high tax , pension , union labor ( $ 3dollars per day instead of the minimum wage that is $7.75 per hour) , avoid law sue  ( work comp), medical benefit , vacation pay and sick leave...etc. saving trillions of dollars for the companies . So a lot of senators and  law maker and congress men were close their eyes and their hears and pretending see no evil and hear no evil from China. Money talk.......$$$$!!!!!!!!. vietnam and Cambodia complied with WTO demanded even Cambodia killing had known all over the world. So what does Laos have to bargain with WTO ? Nothing. Laos is land lost and it will cost more to ship the products from Laos over sea that make the foreign investors careless about Laos unless Laos comply with their demands. So what does Laos have any things to lose by giving the right to her own people ?

Since you have no idea then I'll point it out to you.
My guts feeling is after Laos became a member of WTO,  the only people that will get a bigger chunk of this capital gain are the Chinese, Vietnamese, and Thai, not Laos and the local Lao. Unless Laos government is the boss of their own county and be mor responsible for the well being of their own people stating with the right for employments.

Laos has a lot of to gain to become the member of WTO and more investors and more companies and more revenue to the countries and bad for Chinese and Vietnamese that they will have more competitions. Right now only Thailand , China and Vietnam are the big major investors in Laos. What Laos have to lose to comply with the WTO demands such as the human being right and implement the corruption .It is good for the Lao people and good for the country and nation. What Laos have to lose and no body  have any thing to lose ?

Why Laos just comply with the WTO demands and becomes the WTO member. Give the people the right to be human and stop corrupting and implement . That is a very good idea to do.

I agree with you! Laos people are suffering and lagging behind distance away from Vietnam,Thailand,Cambodia, and China.

Also Laos need more education and more jobs for those coming back home to work and do business in Laos.  And also more net work business to advertise Laos product and production to her neighbors.  Laos need more roads, trucks,Train and Air to transport all of this goods import and export in Laos.

I didn't have any doubt about the gain for Laos economy after became a member of WTO, but the question is who will most likely to gain more from this? Is it Laos and local Lao or is it foreign investors like Vietnam, China, Thailand, and last some of high rank officials?

My feeling it will be a very small gain for the local as usual.

Join WTO every body are in  the winning situation . Laos could not  afford to be isolated like north Korea and Cuba. Land lock is bad enough . First Lao people need to be treated right so the human being right is the most important and second corruption must be stopped and implement that what the WTO demands  the Lao government to comply in order to become WTO member. There will be more investors not only Chinese, Vietnamese and Thailand so Laos has more choice and don't have to be dependence only with China and Vietnam who try to take advantages from Laos in any ways that they have the opportunity . Every penny that the Chinese and Vietnamese are spending on Lao are well calculated not because the Chinese and Vietnamese love Laotian but for the  with a big expectation in return economically and politically. So there are no such as free lunch , every dime the Chinese and Vietnamese help Laos , they gained more more in profit and a lot of political influences in Laos.

About them gaining profit? even though it doesn't sound good to my ears, I think I can deal with it better than political influences and if it's going be like what you said then I'm pretty at ease and excited too!

At least if the WTO allow Laos to become the member and Laos comply by the WTO demand about the human being right and corruption could be implement that are the big step of winning situation for Lao people and the country. That is the new direction that Laos is heading for the better in development and economy growth .

No big deal to be member of WTO. Laos doesn't care if the government allow the people to protest and complain and have the human being right that the government will have problem to develop the country and to give the land To the Chinese and the Vietnamese or foreigner to develop and will be demonstration like in Thailand and in European countries so better no allow any body to do that . What ever the government decisions are the final. The government will make all the decisions for all the people that is the right way to do. One party , one regime and one government no more war is better for the country and the people.

Just speak for yourself or Mr.

Slow development and  slow economy growth and the government is still in control and in the power  to keep peace is better than democracy and then has war and blood shed. Multiple political parties like Thailand and the other democracies countries more protesters and more headache , more opinions , more ideas and then the decisions are delay and will never be able to get any things done. One party government is better than democracy which have many parties and war and blood shed.

Why it is so much trouble  about the human being right and corruption in Laos when China , Vietnam and Cambodia are  much worst than Laos.  Look at Cambodia killing field and China Tiananmen massacre in China.

RE: Slow development and  slow economy growth and the government is still in control and in the power  to keep peace is better than democracy and then has war and blood shed. Multiple political parties like Thailand and the other democracies countries more protesters and more headache , more opinions , more ideas and then the decisions are delay and will never be able to get any things done. One party government is better than democracy which have many parties and war and blood shed.

It's more like the government is having an easier time to control the country that have mostly an uneducated people, because they'll believe in anything their government said to them. As a result Laos is still one of the most under developed country in the world , because of one opinion and one idea in comparison to many other countries of democracy such as U.S.A , Singapore, south Korea, etc... in reality there are only 5 countries on the world that are not democracy country.

So Laos is not the world and Laos doesn't need foreigners to tell Laos what to do it our own land and it's none of the foreigners and the WTO business.
