Customs officials seized more than two tonnes of ivory being stored at Bangkok's main international airport en route from Dubai to Laos, a customs department statement said on Thursday.

The officials, acting on a tip-off, searched a transit cargo warehouse at Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday evening and found 239 elephant tusks, the statement said.

The haul, weighing 2,075 kilogrammes, has a n estimated sale value of 120 million baht (US$3.6 million), it said. No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure.

The shipment arrived on Emirates flight from Dubai and had been declared as telecommunications equipment. It  was due to be flown on to neighbouring Laos.

Customs Department chief Somchai Sajjapong said the documentation names Laos Telecommunication as the company that ordered the cargo, which was declared as telecommunications equipment made in the United Kingdom.

It was transported by flight EK372, which transitted into Thailand on Wednesday, he said.
