Anyone know when this project will get started? I heard news that they has been planning this for some years now. Just wondering when they will start with the construction.

As i've read the News early last year about the New Airport, I think, they were planing to build it at 21km. because it' perfect piece of land that's what the government said. so the warned all the residents who live in that Area do not build any big building or build a big house. But, this is a long term plan , maybe next 20-30. and the new-Airport will cost a billions and billions of dollars i don't know who will be the investor. Thailand, Japan, or China, Don't forget Sanambin-Suvannaphum took thailand more than 30 something years.. to finished...

They still waiting for some donations and big brothers lend the helping hands. Perhaps they still working out some kind of deal with China. Trying to give something away in order for China to fund and build this airport. Everybody knows for damn well that Laos will not fork out their own money to build their own airport. It will not happen in this life time. It will be a similar deal as SEA Games facilities.
Last time I heard, they cannot build the airport at K21, due to the high power line to Thailand, it will cost more to remove the power line, rather than the airport.

The new international aiport will be built at KM 17 on Route 13 South in Xaythani district on a 2 km-wide and 4 km-long lot, and expected to cost no less than $50 million.
Lao authorities also say they expect to fund the project through loans from Japan, the Asian Development Bank, and other ASEAN nations.
In addition, Laos plan to improve and modernize existing airports in Luang Namtha, Savannakhet, and Pakse. Meanwhile, China says it plans to help Laos upgrade the internationsl airport in Luang Prabang, so that it will be able to accommodate more tourists expected to visit the World's heritage site.
I am curious if Laos has an "open skies" policy. Does anyone know? Opening a bigger airport should mean opening up to more international carriers, thus competition ensues and relatively bringing down fares and rates.
