SINGAPORE - Indonesia, one of the star emerging markets over the past year, was rated the most corrupt of 16 major Asia-Pacific investment destinations in a business survey released on Monday.
With corruption rampant at all levels, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's drive to fight graft has been hampered by the politicisation of the issue by those threatened by his efforts, the Hong Kong-based Political & Economic Risk Consultancy said.
'Corruption has become a charge being used by corrupt people to protect themselves and to stifle reform. The whole fight against corruption is in danger of being corrupted,' it said.
Indonesia scored 9.07 out of 10 as the most corrupt nation in the 2010 survey, up from 7.69 points a year ago. The survey polled 2,174 middle and senior business executives in Asia, Australia and the United States.
Cambodia was ranked second most corrupt, followed by Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, India, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, South Korea, Macao, Japan, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia and - rated as the least corrupt in the survey - Singapore.
The survey looked at how corruption affected different levels of political leadership and the civil service, and how major institutions fared in terms of corruption.
It also examined how corruption is perceived to affect the overall business environment, and how easy or difficult it is for companies to deal with the problem internally and externally when they encounter it.
Every where in the world are corrupted but is depend how bad is it, Lao corrupt every where and every things, they take it all, even thought the post men stilt the mail this is to bad corruption!
in every country, everybody corrupted. for singapore they corrupted but they develope their country. I think Laos don't have the right to compliant. if your country is well develope than you can criticize other. that is my opinion.

So you're right! I agreed with you. I posted this bcz I saw and heard many Lao or may be not or just Lao root who living in abroad, most of them complained to Lao authorities regarding corrupted issue, why? Complain, as you mention that every country in the world also there were corruption too even they were called they are developed countries.
For myself, I also living in outsite of Laos, every time I visit Laos, I known too but I don't care Laos just a undeveloped country and just learning about market economic system from few years ago, for sure could not avoid the corrupted issue. This take time.
the survey didnt do in Laos , this survey doesn't list laos as asian's top corrupted country, but it doesn't mean that laos is not corrupted. Laonai know well laos is corrupted or not..
The corruption could not be told by the survey , interview the people and the study. The corruption must be investaged and tranparency with evidences and prove by the creditors , the world bank reported and the countries who gave Laos foreign aid or lent Laos the money to Laos and the monies disappeared and happened to be in the high rank government officials in Swizerland bank. We will lie to ourself if we pretand that there is little bit of corruption in Laos but the big problems in pulling back the progress of development and econmy growth in Laos. Every level from top to the bottom and we all know that in order to get any things done must have some white envelops go along. Even with the police and drug dealers and trafficking...etc. So no need to lie to ourselves. There are a lot of Laotian high rank officials open their banking account in Switzerland and how are those millionsa of dollars coming from ? For sure that are not their salaries and any kind of personal business. And why those high rank officials need to have the banking account in the Switzerland bank or private foreign banks .
