Every time when there will be a new (new) construction project, they always burn the old one???

If we look back in the previouse, all markts in Vientiane must be burned before constructiing new buildings, e.g., Sikhay market, Thongkhankham market, Khuadin market and Thatluang market always burn whenever they want to build new duildingd, why? why? why?

This time, we heard the news that there will be a new project for Thatluang shopping mall that ivested by 3 big shareholders, i.e. Microinfo, etc... so they burn the market again (see the following link).

I am wondering if Vientiane authorities have better problem solving methods? What do you think about this, please provid constructive recomends, thanks.

Its cheap, easy, and effective. Whats wrong with that?

Its common practice to use explosives for demolition.

if the bldg has any historical value or look,
maybe they can preserve that part of it.confuse

when you destroy and rebuild you lose the historical value of that bldg.
historical structures give ppl a sense of appreciation of who they are and
a pride of being part of history.confuse

however, when you are looking at the cost of rebuilding vs upgrading a bldg
i think sometimes it is cheaper and faster to rebuild.confuse

they didnt burn them right? they removed them because it's old why should they keep them? you must know that every developed countries removed the old ones and built the new ones.. thats normal...but some nice building are neccessary to keep and in this case, the ministry of culture should apply for preserve them...for example, the buiding of french style house in vientiane and many places in laos should be kept or redecrorate, the old temple should be preserved and re-build .. and other historal and cultural buiding and place should be kept.. Talat sao ( morning market) WOULD BE VERY ATTRACT IVE IF THE GOVERNMENT PRESERVES IT, BUT IT;S SO PITY.... THE MORNING MARKET WAS AT THE CENTRAL TOWN,,, THATS WHY...

Then people complain about there being no progress and how under-developed the city is. You can't make everyone happy.

Why you already convinced that the Gov. did it? what about the project developers? this way it would speed up things for them do you ever think about it for a minute?

My question is that to people that enjoyed trashing any gov. have any constructive thoughts/ideas?

that is very true.

you just hope that the developer are not given carte blanche over the interest of the local population,
burning and destroying something of historical value.

and that that it was a need arise from
the long term planing for a modern structure to accomodate better flow of crowd, safety, and convenience.

going through procedure and law would be slow and expensive process. confuse

smoking them out with fire would be faster and everyone moves quickly.

This is Lao style. You can't change this as you can't change the poor country to be riches in just one night!

This person he/she thinks she is too cleaver......please! understand no body said Government..... check out the dictionary and learn the meaning of 'authority' - Authorities can be market councils (Jat san talard???), etc..am I right?

I am also a Lao person 100% and I just want to share this idea with people/visitors at samakomlao. As we often seen that traders in market pay the rent at market with alot of money of course they refuse to remove because some of them maybe have paid for long-term rent and burning is at all times effective procedure to solve this problem.

But you think I am enjoyed trashing government?.  No, I am not ! I love my country not less than you do and really want to see Laos is growing in the right direction and therefore I am contributing here.ashamed

Those new buildings suck.

Everyone just drives somewhere else to go to a real market and some Chinese developer has an ugly building in downtown Vientiane to sell expensive Tshirts in. What a waste. Ever walked through one of those new "markets". Who would ever pay money for such trash when you can just cross the  bridge and get something decent from TESCO.
