Lao workers still bound for Thailand despite political unrest

Souksakhone Vaenkeo
Vientiane Times
Publication Date : 19-05-2010

Labour recruitment agencies in Laos are continuing to send workers to Thailand amid the current tense political climate, but are keeping them out of the protest zone.

A member of staff at Sinxai Employment Service Company told Vientiane Times yesterday (May 18) that an employer located in the protest zone requested about 1,000 Lao workers through the company before the demonstrations began, but the Lao company has since decided to decline the request.

However, the company is continuing to send Lao workers to Thai provinces such as Songkhla, where demonstrations have not surfaced.

Lao workers previously sent to workplaces in Bangkok have not been reportedly affected by the unrest, according to the labour agent.

Meanwhile an employee of Lao State Employment Enterprise said the company is encountering difficulties with work permits, saying that several Lao local officials have refused to issue the required documents because of the unrest.

He said Thai employers have made requests demanding large numbers of Lao workers through his company, but they were unable to fulfill them.

An insider at Xaiya Employment Company told Vientiane Times that their business had not been affected by the protests as they send workers to clients located in provinces far from the demonstration zone in Bangkok.

“We commonly send workers to Chanthaburi, Chachoengsao and Khon Kaen provinces and some suburban areas of Bangkok,” she said.

But she underlined that in the event of reports of workers sent by the company being affected by the demonstrations, the company stands ready to return them to Laos, adding that there were no such reports so far.

The labour supplier still believes that the political unrest in Thailand will not affect the Lao labour market and the target destinations in Thailand for Lao workers will remain safe.

All three labour agents interviewed by Vientiane Times asked not to be named.

The Lao ministry of foreign affairs has warned against all but essential travel to Thailand for the general public, government officials, business people and students after the Thai government recently announced the activation of its Internal Security Act, for as long as the act is in force.

The ministry's announcement also warned Lao citizens working in Thailand to avoid entering protest areas.

Thailand is the largest foreign destination for Lao workers. It is estimated that there could be up to 200,000 Lao people working both legally and illegally in Thailand.

Laos needs Thailand for import and export of goods. Listen to Prime Minister Bouasone's statement about the dependency of Laos on Thailand for many things  Laos needs to import and export from or through Thailand. Laos also needs Thailand to help Laos' tourist industry. Most foreign tourists travel through Thailand  to visit Laos. Think about it.

Here you are  again the same  old drama . To be very honest with every body , I said this from my heart and  I am proud to be Lao and I am not  ashamed to be called Ai Lao who eat Padak and sticky rice. My father is Kon Udon and I was born in Kon Nong Khai and I grew up in Vientiane and educated in Laos. Yes of course  , I am loyal to Laos and also I care about Thailand  specially Esan people who speak Lao like me and also eat the same food such as sticky rice and Padak .Now you are happy to insult that Lao people go to Thailand and become victims of slavery in cheap labors ..etc. May be Lao people should go to work in Vietnam or China if they hire Lao people. I just wonder what would happen if the French did not take Vientiane , Champasak and Luang Prabang and the rest of Lang xang  land away from Siam. What would happen today ?

What do you try to compare ? Pollution , trash , traffic jam ...etc or preserve the beauty of nature ? Esan is over 20,000,000 people and Laos is only 6,000,000 people that is over 3/4 of Lao people and land are Esan. Laos was colonized by the other countries for many centuries and had war for many years and never had the chance to develop. Why don't you compare Thailand to Singapore or south Korea ? South Korea and Singapore are smaller than Thailand .Only few decades after the war , these countries are more developed and more modern and economical success than Thailand. Do you know why ? If  you don't know then make the research and find out . It seems that Thailand is following the Burma government foot step any way.

I am not so sure that the person who gave the comment 4 is Lao . I am not here to defense any one or to pick the fight and insult any one but there are some body who would like to see the fight between Lao and Thai in this web.  Siam had done something bad to Lan Xang that Lan Xang was supposed to be the brother or sister country and ally against any enemy such as  the Burma . Siam  has never apologized  but took advantage from the Lao people and look down and talked trash to Lao people. Of course Lao people forgive the Siamese but Lao will never forget . The wound is healed but the scar is still remained in the history .

There is no different from Lao in United States that they are American citizen. To whom it may concern;

If the demand is there and it is safe for lao workers ,I mean 100% safe,
all I can think of is :
ask the thai employers to make official invitation letter for our lao authorities to
spend one weekend to see the real thing themselves ( all expenses paid ).

There will be no more doubt about the issue and they are not to blamed for their decision.  Just try it and see what will happen.

Hey man , you read the whole comment and know the whole story  and know whom and who had said first before pointing your finger at someone and wrongly accusing someone. Perhaps you don't understand English and this blog is for English written only. It doesn't work in here by putting your words in someone 's mouth and wrongly accusing and pointing your finger  at some one.

If you are going to be rude  and use the up-sense language then we have nothing to discuss . I am not here to  fight with any one . I could read Thai that is no problem but Samkomlao 's rule for this blog is English only . It is wasting my time to talk to a person like you too low. You should be banned from this web.
