You are right there are million people just like you and also there million people also are like me. As I told every body here That my father is from Udon and I was born in Nong Kai . So there are million of people just like me who are living in Esan. So this current Thai government make me and million people like me l to think twice now.Laos is Laos and Esan is Esan and also Lanna is Lanna .Will there be any justice for the Esan and Lanna people from the racist and rich people in Bangkok.

It is not because of Taksin. It is because phaya nag came out from the hole. That is why Thailand is in trouble now. Thai Sayarm close the phaya nag hole and now the hole is open again.

ลาวมันคิดมาได้ยังไง อยากได้อีสานคืน
ไทยขอลาวทั้งประเทสบ้าง คนลาวจะรู้สึกยังไง

Being an Isan person is difficult. My family is from Yasothorn Province, some live in Bangkok for work. Lao people (from Laos) do not understand the intricacies that come with our very nuanced existence.

Historically, Isan people are Lao people that were captured during the fall of Lan Xang or forcibly extracted from the Lao successor kingdoms, which ultimately ended up vassals of the Siamese until the French wrestled control of the region in 1898. Prior to this, most of Laos was depopulated, with a good number marched by Siamese armies to Isan from one side of the river to the other, some even forced to settle other parts of the country. History aside, Isan people are Lao people and there are actually more Isan people of Lao descent on the Thai side of the border than all of Laos. In fact, 80% of Lao people are Isan people. Obviously, intermarriage with the local peoples such as the Khmer, Khmu, Phru, Khmer boran and others occurs, but it occurs in Laos, so the argument that we are genetically "impure" Lao is meaningless, since Lao people also intermarry with ethnic groups, who make up a larger percentage of the population than in Isan where 88% of people speak Isan as their predominate language and roughly the same per cent would consider themselves "Isan" in the sense of ethnic Lao of Thailand from the region.

History aside, we have different levels we have to master:

Tai ban hao - Khon Lao ma tae Isan

When villagers gather to discuss the rice yields, the price of water buffalo and the day's small events, they are speaking pure Lao with very very little Thai influence. This is especially true of the older generations as well as a lot of the younger generation from remote areas. It's the language of the home, and it's the same language as homes on the other side of the Mekong.

Lao people might not like that we mix Thai and Lao together, but it only happens because, we live in Thailand. Isan has local radio stations and morlam, but to appeal to a broader Thai audience, we have to use Thai vocabulary so that the albums are intelligible enough to listeners who are not fluent, but probably acquainted with the basic words. For things we learn about in Thai-language books, Thai-language schools (as if Isan-language schools exist!), Thai-language television, Thai-language internet, etc., we use Thai words. Thai is a mandatory language in school, government, official media outlets, public service announcements, signs and, should we ever desire to be more than just rice farmers in Isan or to make extra money in the dry season, your boss will expect you to understand Thai and at least speak it well enough to be understood.

Thai people not from Isan

Speaking Lao provides no benefits other than its use to talk to family members, childhood songs and connect with the shared Lao culture. Outside of Isan, the Lao language usually earns scorn and embarrassment. Our Lao or Isan language is derided because it is not Thai, or it is treated as a bad form of Thai heavily influenced by Lao. Telling someone that "the water buffalo are dying in the cold" sounds to Thai people like "my f_cking penis dies in the cold (doesn't work when it's cold)" And having someone overhear your youngest brother bak ham noy only causes laughter, confusion or derision. Isan people would never speak Lao in earshot of a Thai person unless they are in Isan, otherwise they speak Thai. A women on a bus in Bangkok talking to her sister in Isan will speak Thai and her sister might speak Thai, a mix of Thai and Isan or just plain Isan (Lao), but if on speakerphone and the Lao comes out, it is mute time!

No standard Lao language in Isan

There is no "standard Isan" as there is in Laos, at least in writing. The dialectal differences in Laos that are beginning to fade because of the influence of Vientiane does not effect Lao dialects in Thailand, as Thai is the only medium for writing, although we have a rather ad hoc way of writing Lao with Lao-like spelling of most words and Thai-like spelling for words that are the same, even if pronounced very differently, albeit using the Thai alphabet because, we are not taught the Lao alphabet and few Isan people are crossing the river for work when Bangkok pulls everyone in. Thai vocabulary is sometimes also needed where different dialects have different words not used. For instance, in the north of Isan, people speak very akin to the way Lao is spoken near the capital of Luang Phrabang, and Nong Khai like Vientiane, and the south of Ubon and the south like the folks of Champassak, or adopted words from the local peoples. Words for local herbal plants, some animals, and peculiar foods might be localized to small village areas so Thai helps fill the gap, whereas Lao people would use a Standard Lao equivalent if it existed.

Lao people from Laos, please forgive your Lao brothers and sisters in Thailand. We are Lao ethnically, but we belong and are content with being a part of Thailand. We still share a beautiful culture, a beautiful language and numerous traditions that will always link us. Even the river, divides us into two nations, but links us as the focal point of the Lao-speaking world. That Luang or That Phanom, on both sides ... we share reverence. We are Buddhists, we love our spirits too, we eat sticky rice and padaek, and when mom at home cooks food, we call the names the same as you do. BUT we are Thai citizens and despite our love of Lao culture, we are Thai and participate in Thai society. We do not have our own written language, but we have not forgotten our roots, but we have to adapt and be Thai just as the Lao expect the Hmong and Lavo and Khmu to adopt Lao language and customs, the Thai Siamese ask the same of us.

Lao people, you were spared the influences from Siam and Thailand, but not completely. Thai slang is uttered by Lao youth, and Lao people also read Thai magazines, news, manuals, books and tune into our tv and listen to Thai music, and I don't mean just Isan music, but also artists who sing exclusively in Thai because they are Thai. Lao people, however, have a government and a state that promotes Lao language and culture, Isan people do not. Lao people have a written language that connects them to the Lao past, Isan people were forbidden to learn the Lao alphabet so we do not. We didn't forget because we wanted to, we were forced to a long time ago. Lao people also had a bloody civil war and we saw our brothers that flee Laos and settle with us ... even as Laos gets better, it's hard to shake off the memory as well as the fact that Laos is a poorer country, ruled by Communists which overthrew its monarchy and only exists separately because of French intervention. That's not an attack, it's just fact. Without the French, Laos would be just part of Isan.

The shared relationship we have is complicated, with political motivations to keep us apart through rhetoric, but at the end of the day, a few Thai words never hurt anyone, but asking an Isan person to stop eating sticky rice might. The problem Laos Lao people have is that as part of Thailand, Thailand claims the culture of the Isan people as, rightly so, a regional culture. We are all Tai peoples after all. So yes, "som tam" is a Thai dish. And they way they make it in Bangkok with sugar and peanuts and bland is ... well. Then there is tam bak hoong, that's the real stuff, with the crabs and bitter plums. It might be better described as sibling rivalry, frenemy or love-hate.

Just remember

ISAN = THAI CITIZEN (but Lao ETHNIC) So when we end all sentences in der khrup , just remember that without the French, you folks on the other side of the river would also be doing the same thing, driving on the left, and reading Thai. That's okay. As a result of that, you guys have done such a better job preserving Lao culture that is lost as we (over the period of FOUR CENTURIES) have had to adapt to Thai culture and national attitudes. Phi nong Lao Phi Nong Isan Hak Gan
