Discussion on use of seasonal climate forecast info
(KPL) Almost 80 officials of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and relevant officials took part in a meeting on utilising Seasonal Climate Forecast on 3-4 January.
Sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the European Union Delegation in the Lao PDR, the meeting is aimed at discussing the generation and use of seasonal climate information in the Lao PDR and bringing together the users and the generators of climate information, according to FAO Representative in the Lao PDR Mr. Serge Verniau.
These discussions will lead to the creation of a regular Monsoon Forum, an ongoing dialogue between these two key groups. This dialogue will ultimately result in enhanced use of climate information for decisions in sectors linked to food security, said Mr. Serge.
One of the key issues that many developing countries in the region are faced with is the lack of quality agro-met observations for monitoring the impacts of climate and agriculture, according to Mr. Serge.
Understanding and making effective use of accurate, available climate information is crucial to ensuring food security, for today and the future where climate change is expected to impose additional stress on agricultural systems and human livelihoods, added the FAO Representative.
The Monsoon Forum being convened today is the first step in the Lao PDR that will lead to a sustained dialogue between the producers of climate information and the user agencies, said Minister to thePrime Ministers Office and Head of the Water Resources and Environment Administration Mme. Khempheng Pholsena.
