The National Election Committee on Monday made an official announcement regarding the results of last Saturday's National Assembly (NA) 7th Legislature election.
The event was attended by Lao and foreign media, as well as representatives from international organisations, ambassadors and the Diplomatic Corps in Laos.
A total of 132 candidates, out of 190 standing for election, have been elected as NA members and will represent the Lao multiethnic people over the next five years.
Of the total, 99 are male, accounting for 75 percent, and 33 are female, accounting for 25 percent.
Forty-four, or 31.8 percent, of the elected members are from the government, and 90 members are from local authorities, accounting for 68.18 percent.
Member of the National Election Committee and Head of the Secretariat Sub-Committee Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane said the election took place from 7am to 5pm on April 30 throughout the country's 17 constituencies.
“After local voting units completed their vote counts, they reported the results to the National Election Committee at the central level and the committee conducted a thorough count and check before issuing notification of the election results,” he said.
The election of NA members is a process in which the democratic rights of the Lao multiethnic people are implemented through the selection of personnel of appropriate quality to serve as representatives in the NA, Dr Xaysomphone said.
“The election took place in a joyful atmosphere. It was fair and in compliance with relevant laws, and importantly was safe and secure.”
Some 3.24 million people were eligible to cast a vote, of which 1.6 million were female. A total of 3.23 million voters cast a ballot on the day, equalling 99.6 percent of the total eligible voters.
Eligible voters must be at least 18 years of age, and can vote regardless of gender, ethnicity, religious belief, social status or profession.
Dr Xaysomphone said voters showed great enthusiasm in exercising their political rights to ensure qualified personnel are elected to the NA, the public body that represents the legal power of the people, by the people and serving the interests of the people.
The NA is a legislative body which plays an important role in making fundamental decisions for the nation, as well as overseeing the performance of the executive body, the prosecutor's office and the people's court.
The Assembly was founded in 1975, the same year of national liberation. Since its establishment, more than 90 laws have been enacted as legal instruments to manage the state and society.
NA elections are held every five years. The previous election was held in 2006 when 115 members were elected.
The new NA will soon hold a preliminary session when a new Assembly president, president and vice president of Laos, prime minister and government members will be approved by the newly-elected members. (See p. for results)
