The word LAO is and remains a noble word. It was initially misused to call poor dark uneducated farmers from the Isaan region who went to look for work in Bangkok several decades ago by Bangkok Thai.  Before 1975, Isaan people were calledLao-Isaan by Bangkokian and Thai-Isaan by Lao people from the east side of the Mekong. 

After 1975, the development of Laos went backward for two decades, while Thailanddeveloped itself fast, including the Thaification and development of the Isaan region.

As a result, the Isaan people now have a higher living standard and are better incorporated into the mainstream Thailand. On the other hand, Laos was furtherbehind Thailand and only recently has begun to open up and develop its economy,education and  infrastructure. 

Consequently, the bad use of Lao initially intended for Isaan people has now been directed for Lao people in Laos as well. Especially, the young Thai generations, including those from Isaan, do not have any idea of the real intent and when and how the use Lao word had started.

The point is only some ignorant people use Lao word with a bad intent to make fun others. Throughout southeast Asian countries, people tend to have this mentality oflooking down on their neighbors who are poorer "materialistically" than themselves as a way to make themselves look better. Some people feel insecure of being perceived as being less developed. That's a third world mentality.

As for Khon Lao, Laonai and Laonork, there is no point to reply to such ignorant mentality by behaving equally or even more ignorantly. Doing so would only re-enforce their ignorant mentality about you.

Lao people better off improve their education, economy and living standards in and outside of Laos to show those guys that they themselves are actually the ones who are poor and ignorant and who need to educate themselves.

Lao and dark Issan are the same what make you think you are or they are different. Not any better.

As for Isan. Yes, Isan was part of Lao Lan Xang.  The dark Lao was Khmer.  300 000 thousands Khmer soldier was a gift from the Khmer King to his son in law to established his new Kingdom. That is why Khmer and Lao has never fought each other in our history.
