I don't think any Esan person would want to come back to Laos. They left Laos for a reason, to go somewhere better for their life. It's like asking all the Lao norks if they want to come back to Laos. Hell no. We don't want to live under stupid commie rule, it would be like going backwards. Most of the Esan people speak mostly Thai language anyways, they learn it in school. They are assimilated into Thai culture now so they don't think of themselves as Lao although they are aware of their roots. If you go accross to Nong Khai or Udon they speak Thai or "Esan", not Lao. Most people in Laos can speak Thai but Thai people do not speak or understand Lao.

The real question is why don't Lao people ask to take Laos back for the Lao people instead of these dog viet commies that are destroying the country. Did anyone in the past destroy Laos as much as these commies? Did the French? I wish the French still controlled Laos, at least we wouldn't be eating dog shiet still.

You're totally wrong, have you even been to Nong Khai or Laos? If you come to my country Laos and visit Mueng Noi, Xengda, Nong Dok, and many areas you will feel that you are in Nong Khai or Udon because they speak like you said "Esan". The Esan people may feel pity for you because you are poorer than they are, but they have lived in their own land for centuries and in a much better living standard. Have I ever been to Nong Khai or Laos, of course, I was born in Udon. My father is from Vientiane. I am Canadian but now I live and work in the USA. I am not one of them Lao person who is lazy and stays in one place all their life. I am kon Esan and I would prefer not to go back to Laos unless it changes from it's current commie dictatorship. The Thai–Laotian Border War (December 1987 – February 1988) was a short confrontation between Thai and Laotian forces. I was just in Nong Khai and Udon visiting relatives and they do not speak Lao at all. Their kids do not speak Lao cause they've gone through the Thai school system. There is no Lao flag there, and no one admits to being from Lao, not even the tuk tuk drivers.

Your right these people on this blog have no clue that Essan and the Lao language or nearly the same. The Lao language was given a different name by a Thai king who thought as Thais do that some how they are better than every one else on the planet, not! He ask the academics at the time to make some changes to Lao so that they could rename the Lao language and call it by a different name (Essan). Essan is not a Thai dialect and that is why Thais out side of Essan have no understanding of the language but people who speak Lao understand Essan well and people who speak Essan understand Lao very well. This also applies to what is called Northern Language in the far north west of Thailand, it is called Northern Thai but is completely different language, it's Lana a group that was eventually assimilated into the Thia borders after many push and pulls of land boundaries.

Funny i found this web board by accident while searching for a topic that has nothing to do with this... This is in English but it appears that it is Central Thais and Lao people arguing here about some thing so silly. Laos is a good country and true it is not nearly as developed as parts of Thailand but then it is not any where as corrupted as Thailand is! The corruption in Thailand is unbelievably bad and most Thais are too brain washed that they have such a great county that they don't admit how big a problem it is that they have there. Lao and Essan People are very similar but the Laos are not brain washed which is a strong point for their culture.

What a bunch of Bull **** about the French doing good for Laos, and it was not the Vietnamese that screwed up Laos, but the Americans and their secret war there that destroyed so much of the potential Laos had and killed so many innocent people there, even today many children and people die and are dismembered by land minds that were dropped on a country that never entered into either side of the Vietnam war, just Americans and their trashy wars for the sake of commercial interest in the profits of war and politics about controlling areas of the world they think they might have an interest in strategically.

Seems most that have posted here need to read up on history with books not written by Thais.

Laos is peaceful now so don't think about this to creating some problem between Laos-Thai. Especially we are going to open the country for ASEAN Community in the next 2 years. Laos people will be able to work or do business in any countries in ASEAN.

According to ThamNai(Lao Prophecies), Esan will return to Laos on it's own. This is after Rama IX(Ninth Thai King) passes and Lao Nork will return to Lao. Classical Esan Morlam singers love to recite verses of Thamnai in their morlam but make sure to keep out Esan's return to Lao, Rama IX passing out of their songs for obvious reasons. It's hard to imagine but it will come to pass.

You guys are talking about Esan. But how many of you have actually lived amongst/worked with this people?? I would like to know. I can go on and on about these people and a lot of it is not positive opinions. Any Lao that has extensive experiences with Esan Lao will know what i'm talking about. They're still our brothers/sisters and I wish them all the best, but the content of the character of "most(not all)" is not very good.

Lao people planned this all along. They are very sneaky! They let their people populate most of Esan and northern Thailand. Then their people become Thai citizens to gain full rights in Thailand. And now they're going after Bangkok. Their plan is to take over all of Thailand!!! Don't trust the Lao people! They think like the Chinese. They only care about taking over Thailand.

Thai people won't have any land left if outsiders including Lao, Chinese, and Vietnamese, keep coming to Thailand to steal jobs and lands!!!!

Lao people think too much like Chinese. They want to dominate Thailand and leave Thai people without any jobs or money.
