Anyone ever wonder why the Lao people have always been (300+years) the most unfortunate people of all S.E.Asia and one of the most poorest countries in the world according to a UNDP report. As reported in the Vientiane Times English newspaper, the Lao people consume more drink of sprite (beer Lao) than any other country in S.E.Asia.Lao are apathetic = Bored,Lazy, unconcerned, droopy, listless about work as stated by the PM Mr.Thongsing Dec.24/13 Vientiane Times front page.If you believe in karma then you have to wonder if the Lao people were good people then why is their karma so terribly bad?
I been living in Laos 8 years, married with two children and wouldn't recommend doing the same to my own worst enemy!I been to many places over the world and must say the Lao people are getting what they deserve, bad luck.Do nothing reap nothing!Lao people are very horizontal people, always laying around. They really like that everyone feels sorry for them.NGO's and government organizations pour money into Laos but most the money goes into the pockets of the government authorities or the Anglo (white people) staff operating them here. These cost are covered up so their main office in the mostly European countries get good news/progress reports but little gets done for the cost.
I speak from experience!Come to Laos to visit if you want but do not follow in my footsteps.Come here enjoy yourself and move on.The trap looks so sweet and nice but its all a facade, these people are very unhappy looking, and very self centered, never caring much more for others, other than themselves then their families.
Yes i will leave here in the next 5 years after my investments have time to yield a sizable fruit. Then i will make loads of $ monthly and not have to be around the Lao people as many other investors do in Laos.
A lot of Lao people in Laos and ESPECIALLY a lot of Lao refugees overseas don't like the situation(condition) in Laos at all. The only people who are satisfied with the current situations are Lao officials, their families/extended families, and pot belly farangs that have found a new place to find whores.
You're wrong about Lao people deserving this. Yes there are lot of Lazy people, moping around, drinking, whoring, partying, gambling, shopping all day. But not everyone is like that. Still a lot of good people in Laos especially outside of Vientiane.
Laos will only change after Vietnam is forced to loosen it's grip on that country.
The Cambodians have showed in the past couple of months that they've had enough of the Viets themselves and soon they'll be better off when the Viets are gone.
Yes u -r-correct.The only people who care about Laos and like to see a change, and might be willing to do something about it are people living outside of Laos.As for those people of Laos living here in Laos are unwilling to do anything at all!I have presented this idea that they should do somthing and they ask what can they do?I reply just watch the news (as they do every night while eating and drinking Beer Lao) follow what other countries around u-r doing, protest! The only way most any countries have made major changes are from within through/by the people taking action to change.People laugh and say no way this ever happen in Laos, but in fact it has once in the history of Laos after the Soviet/Communist took over all the temples were closed and monks were kicked out.The people took to the streets in protest.Laos people were given back what was taken away. The temples were reopened. All that was needed was the Lao people had to have the balls to get off their lazy asses, stand up and protest.
Have u read lately about the ongoing/current daily protest in Cambodia and Thailand. Both had dual party elections a first for Cambodia who is also ruled over by Vietnam. The losers in Thai. are having troubles accepting the majority voted and won the PM they wanted.
I have heard talk that Vietnam is considering multi party elections.
Hopefully Burma's goverment will continue to make changes and get a government in place similar to Japan or Korea.Burma could prove the example to all of S.E.Asia that if you run/govern your country more correctly that there are numerous rewards.Burma has numerous resources, the people i heard are hard workers, and not looking for handouts as Lao people do but rather have work/job opportunities.Give a Lao a job ,then pay them on a Friday they most likely won't be back to work on Monday.Yes i agree that this doesn't apply to every Lao living in Laos but it does apply to most all Lao.Yes i agree that the Lao living in the country side are more likely to work harder, but the majority of the Lao people live in the larger cities in Laos where they are quickly influenced by their drunken Lao families/friends in the larger cities of Laos.
Bottom line is the Lao people are and always been the most misfortunate/unluckiest people of any/all of S.E.Asia for 300 years+ and have done little-nothing to make any changes to their goverment or whatever it take to make a better country for their country and their childrens country, the country of of my children. The majority of the people inside Laos refuse to speak about any of this or even to think about it,rather drown their sorrows in government subsidized cheap Beer Lao nightly.
Yes i am concerned about Laos!Yes i want see a change in the behavior of the Lao people.I am very much involved finically here and this is the country my two children were born in.Through dialogue/expressing feelings/thoughts hopefully the Lao people will change the way the Lao people go about their work ethics. They better soon, before 2020 full implication of the Asian community. After then there be no bleeding harts for the Lao people who rather lay around not working and drunk on good ole Beer Lao.Thailand,Vietnam,China, and other Asian countries will be much moved into Laos by then with their own work ethics/force.There will be plenty of good opportunities for the Lao who want to apply themselves to work hard.
This will be the largest invasion/change of Laos since the _ _ _ _French divided the country or the Thai.invasion from long ago.
The vast majority of Lao people best wake-up(sober up) and smell the coffee. The trains (speed rails) r-coming.Either get on board (change)or get ran over, times in Laos will change much starting the latter part of 2015 then beyond.
Everyone go ahead feel sorry for the lazy Lao drunks (highest amount of liquor consumers in S.E.Asia) who care less to work.Yea i got it all wrong?Continue to feel sorry for these people/no reason for them to change/continue on.
Karma is happening everyday.Karma is coming to us all.Karma is how i ended up in Laos unhappy.I hope my Karma in the future is very good and what seems to have been very bad Karma will turnout to be the opposite.I look forward to the future of Laos development.Everyone gets what they deserve in the end.
Most of the hardworking Lao people are in Thailand. Last year the Thai news estimated half a million Lao workers in Thailand. Most of them are working in factories, restaurants, hotels, etc. The others are whores. There are whole apartment buildings in BKK and surrounding areas filled with all Lao workers. Lao workers in Thailand are generally known to work harder than their Thai counterparts. The Lao that stay behind are the lazy ones and yes there a lot of em.
I know a lot of Farang that live/work in Thailand. Some have lived there for 20+ years. A lot of them are married to Thai women and almost all of them are constantly complaining about Thailand/Thais lol. They also talk a lot about leaving. Some actually have and have gone back. I would rather live in Thailand than Laos though with how things are currently.
AS i said previously. The Lao living in Lao don't want to talk, think. or do anything about their situation at all, rather drink and watch Thai TV shows.I think perhaps because in the back of their mines they remember the events that took place after the communist took over. Most will admit they fear their goverment.A government official once demanded i show respect to him.I told him NO!If you want my respect u must earn it not demand it.
As for education in Laos it seems all the schools suck!Had both my kids in 2 intern. private schools over the years here and been disappointed.A friend had his kids in the most prestigious school and pulled his kids out.My kids did have one good teacher a Filipino.Asked how much she gets paid.Ends up what i am paying for both my kids to attend the school is around what she's getting paid.Figure (simple math) a smart thing to do was hire her as my kids private teacher/home schooling of sorts. We will get the lack of social interaction by them attending swim,judo,etc.. classes.Giving the teacher and her family a apartment near (1 block) our house to live in.
One thing i want to admit though to you the readers. My two kids seem very happy here! Neighborhood we live in,the shop their mother has all around, the doors are open and all the neighborhood kids around run from one house/business to another to hang out.
About having a wife here/Thai./Vietnam,it doesn't seem to matter in this age we live in no matter where u live the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.i did live in Thai. a few years before moving into Laos to stay and figure it was a mistake but time will tell as i previously mention.Have a number of irons in the fire that hopefully will be very beneficial.I most likely wouldn't had gotten involved in if i hadn't been in Laos.
Just very difficult to live in a place and trying to get things accomplished like getting our new house built.Builder has finally given up on the Lao workers (joke) and put a Vietnam company on it.The Lao workers had a lot more work they could of gotten but now they are free to lay down and drink their cheap good ol Beer Lao.
As for workers from Laos in Thai. Yes these are the smart ones that learnt to leave the Lao way behind them and few of them ever return to live/work in Laos, same as the ones who go abroad for a education.Everyone likes to visit and drink Beer Lao on holidays then run across the border to work.
But you got to wonder about the Lao peoples Karma! In S.E.Asia theres lots of wishing/praying for good luck.Theres the belief if u do good things u receive good luck and the opposite if you do bad.Just saying/wondering.How can this group of people have such a large amt. (one of the poorest in the world and poorest in S.E.Asia) of bad luck if they are good people?
Lao people are extremely- self centered! As my neighbore (Lao) once explained to me about the majority of Lao people."I care mostly about myself mostly, then my family some.All/everything/everyone i don't care about don't think about"
Recommend to everyone who wants to know more/up to date about Laos to subscribe to the Vientiane Times newspaper. Received per internet. The paper is owned/managed by the communist Lao Government.I been very surprised to what the paper will disclose to the worlds public for being so much controlled.
A number of times i gotten in hot water by government or Lao people by repeating and committing on stories i have read. Most the time they refuse to believe i am telling the truth that i read it in the V.T. returned to one gov. officials office with the paper and story to prove i wasn't lying. He got real pissed-off tore the paper up saying the V.T. no good!I asked why u speak the Lao gov. no good?He said back he not say this.I said the paper is owned/operated by the gov. u speak bad about the V.T.u speak bad about the gov.!
Most everything i ever mention can be backed by a story i have read in the Vientiane Times.
Heck tha PM Dec. 24th in the V.T. said it! The people are apathetic about work.Recent other stories have reported that Lao people drink a lot/most!
Theres a number of Lao who have studied abroad and have return to Laos and had/have hopes to run the gov. better.Problem is as reported in the V.T. theres a lot of gov. in Laos.More than 2 per Lao person! Many are well beyond retirement age, can't run a computer, and hire someone else (a sorta crutch)to assist them. But at least the gov. is admitting it.If they do anything about it,time will tell.Theres always hope!
I agree with almost everything you posted. I appreciate your post.
I'm an oversea Lao refugee and i spend the majority of my year working in Southeast Asia(mostly Thailand). The work/business/living climate is the most unfriendliest towards oversea Lao. The Lao PDR put in an extra effort to mess with oversea Lao. Even among a lot of normal Lao people there is a strong jealousy towards the Laos that left after 1975. IMO there is no one that cares more for Laos than the oversea Lao refugees. Even Prince Souphanouvong who founded the Pathet Lao said this in his deathbed.
Majority of the Lao in Laos that have studied abroad are children/relatives of Lao officials. Most of them go to Thailand, Australia, and the US. I've run into a lot of them over the years and getting properly educated is the farthest thing from their minds. They're just out to party/shop/be stupid.
People in Laos think they're know-it-alls. They get a little bit of "education" and think they're better than you.
IMO Laos will only change after Sam Rainsy/Khem Sokha and the Khmers succeed in Cambodia. Only then will the "few" reform minded Lao officials grow some balls and tell the Viets to go screw themselves.
Again your observations and thoughts are much appreciated. I enjoyed your post. Most Lao don't like to talk about real issues. They sweep everything underneath the carpet. If you have any other things that are on your mind concerning Laos please post them here. It's nice to hear things from someone who actually lives in Laos on a daily basis.
Great to receive your reply.Nice to have someone listen and agree with at least part of what i mention. If u were white you be writing how badly the Lao have been treated by the countries of (U.S./France).Yes they(Lao gov.)made some bad deals that effected the Lao people and padded the pockets of the Lao gov. who made the deals.Cry a river of tears, the Lao people need to man-up (grow balls) and make a change for their country themselves, take control, resposanbility, stop drowning in sorrows.U loa living abroad should reconsider sending cash to your relatives and supporting their lazy, drunken habits.Yea i am envious of my neighbors and a number of Lao families i know who have so much and work so little.Wish someone in my wife's family living abroad send us some free support (a new term used by the Lao gov. now).Heck i am white living in one of the worlds least educated, most misfortunate countries.Hows bout feeling sorry for me?Don't worry about my spending your hard work for money on Beer Lao as long as i am able to keep the money out of the hands of my Lao wife whom after having our two children changed her ways to take up the drink as the majority of the Lao do with the number of woman now drinking increased at a alarming amt. as reported in the V.T.I don't drink or smoke and refuse to let my situation drive me to do so.I will not cave-in,but being sober
keeps me more aware of the situation here. Most the whites living here drink heavily. But this isn't true for all the Lao.Read todays(Jan6) paper in The Vientiane Times (V.T.) PG.23.Recall i mentioned previously that anyone really wishing to know more of whats happening in Lao subscribe to receive the paper per internet.Correction:i stated earlier there were 2 Lao gov.emploies per 1 Lao citizen, today the paper states 2.36 per 100 citizens, thats more than any other country around Laos.
About your not being able to return and live/work in Laos i think u are very wrong.I read a number of stories how the gov. in changing things in order to persuade the refugees to return to Laos, maybe this hasn't taken effect yet.I have a new friend who's a refugee who's return to Laos and doing a lot of projects in Laos.
Word of caution to anyone thinking about wanting to come into Laos and make business.Do not do so with the Lao gov. involved except the project in Laos.Make business/partnership through a Lao resident, someone who can own property who u can lease the prop.from.
As for the Lao being jealous of those who left while the running was available.Heck those who ran were the smartest of Lao!History states that Lao lost 30% of the most intelligent at that time.I know a number of Lao who stayed behind, went to the Communist re-education camps, returned to their homes to find they had lost more than 50% of what they had previously.Others stayed behind to care for their elderly family members and now sucking the tit and drinking free Beer Lao off their family living abroad.
Yes i know a few of the Lao who have gone abroad and studied and return to Laos. One is my wifes cousin who is extremely smart!Except last i heard he had decided not to further his education (he was offered a Albright Scholarship if he only apply.)and rather continue his carer in a branch of the Lao gov.where he has been moving up steadily but i think he never will be able to get as high as he like because his family isn't part of those afforded this opportunity. The upper positions are reserved for those know-it-all's you mentioned. But hopefully this will change. The cousin mentioned is who told me how there are a few Laos like him who want to better the country and will soon, once the old gov. officials retire (age 60) and make room for them.Hopefully this time is upon Lao now!As reported today (2nd story 2nd day) in the V.T.about the number of gov. authorities who have surpassed the manitory retirement age.
FYI:Other whites living here who own a business, work for a NGO,or a government organization mention about the issues i mention but never to loudly because they don't want to lose their business or their jobs that are paying them very well!I have a friend who works for a very large gov.org. who suppose to be helping the Lao people. He gets paid 300 Euros per day writing computer programs or something, that like most everything gets forward to their big bosses in the supporting countries that end up laying on a shelf collecting dust.Japans JICA paid for a program on Vientiane Urban Development Plan thats never been inplemented. Seprate boundaries are set out for separate building zones but where these boundaries are not exactly clear. I had a meeting with JICA about this and a Vientiane (city)official. We drove out to our property area and i pointed to the JICA plan/map and asked wheres the dividing points?Show me please?I received no answer.Just more of the hard worked for money of the good hearted people of the
developed worlds countries being misused by not the Lao gov. or its people but by the employes of the organizations receiving the money and in trusted to use the money to benefit the Lao people.
There must be a way to really help those who need help with the majority of the money getting to those who need the money.
I like the yearly presentation of CNN Hero's!We have no heroes in Laos.Just a bunch of drunken self-centered people of any race.
I think most of the Lao refugees that return have relatives in places of power. Some started returning in the early 90's. There is a minority within the oversea Lao community that actually like how things are in Laos. Most will not or cannot return for different reasons. Some have experienced or have heard of too many horror stories.
You have to understand the mindset of the Lao PDR leaders. They consider oversea Laotians their rivals. A part of them still lives in the past. If it were so easy to bring change to Laos it would have happened a long time ago. The Lao PDR leaders and their Vietnamese bosses are quite ruthless. MANY in Laos have spoken up and have died for it. What has happened to Sombath Sophone happens all the time except no news comes from it. Returning Lao refugees get killed in Laos/Thailand and disappear yearly. It's no joke.
Because they have to stop thinking like western people do; greed, money, luxury, high expectations! Lao people was nice and honest before those **** hits their brain.
First of all, most of the lao nork are extremely biased and hold a rediculous notion that life was somehow better during royal lao days. It puzzles me to hear their mindless blather over and over again because it is so phony. Whoever believes that crap is just as stupid if not more stupid.
During the royal lao period lao was extremely poor and impoverished. It wasn't some magical paradise that lao norks paint it to be. only about 10% of the population could read and write. Schools were mostly filled with Vietnamese and royal family members. 90% of Laos was subsistence farming.
Also enough of this fake scare crap about the Vietnamese running Laos. People should know the real truth. Vietnamese were mostly brought to Lao during the French occupation. The Lao royals SUPPORTED French occupation the whole time and said nothing when the Vietnamese held most major positions in government and public affairs. As long as the queen king and the rest of the inbreds were comfortable at the palace, all was fine in Laos. They didn't say anythingwhen france was making Lao citizens do slave labor and be second rate to the Viet. I do not support the Vietnamese as i am pro china and ccp but come on blaming Vietnam for everything gets old.
Laos never had a true democracy always we were r:led by a king and his "holy blood line" or amerikkkan backed thugs. Many times Lao was supposed to have a coalition government but the rightist elemwnts (usa backed) always found a way to sabotage votes or throw out elections. Souphanovong won Vientiane capital votes multiple times i think in 1962 but the election wasn't counted. Same thing what Amerikkka did to Vietnam disallowed national elections in tge 50s which would have unified Vietnam because ho chi minh was projectef to win.
Just because Laos doesn't follow the same guidelines as the white man puts too be successful doesn't mean Lao aren't happy. Globalization is forcing the white man's concept on Laos.
Sombath is a CIA lackey, just like most oversea " dissidents" go read how many times the CIA and Amerkkka have overthrown governments for their own benefit.
I think most of the Lao refugees that return have relatives in places of power. Some started returning in the early 90's. There is a minority within the oversea Lao community that actually like how things are in Laos. Most will not or cannot return for different reasons. Yes it is a joke. Bring what change? What change does Laos need? A so called "democracy"? Look how "democracy" works in Thailand. The last 70 years they have been fighting every couple years this group vs that group, all pupeteered by the king. The only reason Thailand has some sort of success is because it has been bankrolled by the west/cia/ imperialists and has conquered Laos and Cambodia repeatedly. Does democracy work in America? Two supposedly seperate parties argue and bicker veto each others votes and nothing gets done. One party will purposely shoot down even a good idea so the credit doesn't go to the other side.
Look at all the 1st world countries, they only have success based on conquering others. Laos hasn't had that gift of being able to be a large nation and conquer/steal resources to build the nation.
Again Vietnamese bosses really? A bit of exaggeration on Lao norks part as usual.
Spoken up about what? Lao government is corrupt ? Sure it is but what government isn't? I follow a socialist path and base my theories and ideals on Mao's teaching. Sure I hate seeing the revolution underminded by corrupt people in the Lao government. Laos does have a growing middle class something that it has never had in its history. That middle class often contains families that are NOT affiliated with the government.
People like Sombath are just CIA agents planted by America to try and strengthen its loyatly to America. The CIA uses agents all the time to cause insurrection and instability so that the new party will come in and basically ok everything America says. America is AFRAID of China reaffirming itself in Southeast Asia. America already has its hooker Siam under influence but is now rushing to secure Lao Cambodia influence before China can come assert itself. I welcome the Chinese with open socialist arms to Laos.
You can be successful in Laos without even having to step on the governments toes. You need to work hard, be persistent, live a socialist lifestyle and you will live beyond your means in the future.
Those who ran were cowards, they were afraid because of the injustice they were apart of and supported. They sup ported a murderous government who allowed the bombing of its own land and citizens just to save their own sorry corrupt assses. Of course they always claim life was better during their time. And why not because of their own connections they got to receive higher education and positions of power.
The pathet lao improved literacy and living conditions by leaps and bounds after the take over because they actually made an effort to go to the bannok and help the villagers, not just improve the lives of a phew in the city like America and royal lao. Vientiane before pathet lao victory was a drug infested whore house that ignored all of the Lao values and traditions. This is why Lao norks are so rude and vulgar growing up in a violent hateful America and living in a foreigner controlled Vientiane before Pathet Lao liberation.
The heroes of laos are the hardworking socialist people and the brave Pathet Lao that defeated multiple superpowers.

Think!
Laos is and always been the most poorest country in S.E.Asia.Maybe a new type of government leadership is in need instead of the present day, many over 60yrs. of age, past the required age of retirement,Russian/comunist educated who refuse to leave/retire in order for a newer generation of Lao leaders who are much more/better educated than the many present day Lao government leaders.
Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world presently, according to UNDP reports/ratings.
Laos people consume more alcohol than any other country in S.E.Asia.Sure they are happy.Drunken happiness.
As stated by Lao PM Mr.Thongsing The Lao people are apathetic about their work/jobs and need to change in order to move forward.
Not many Lao can read their own countries language.
Like it or not a change is coming soon to Laos. Not only by the Chinese but by all nations of the Asian community beginning the later part of 2015.
Lao people and their leaders have had the country for 300+ years and made little to no improvements that went to the PEOPLE of Laos.

Our lovely felon neighbor Siam has been "blessed" with pseudo democratic governments for 70+ years now. What has that gotten them? The only reason they were a power in SE Asia was because they became America's launchpad for CIA actions and other actions. And before that they were a power because of repeatedly stealing from and invading Cambodia and Laos.
So you honestly want the most bombed nation per capita in the history of the world to magically turn around and reverse all the sh1t Amerikkka did to it ?
You are so right comrade, because royal systems are garbage. Basically Lao was being sucked of any little resource it had by France and then America. The phony puppet royals allowed France and America to do whatever they wanted. The Pathet Lao on the other hand gave positions of power and educated the minorities who never even saw past their village due to the racism of Lao policy.
It is hard for a country of 6 million to really become some type of huge superpower. With 50% of its arable land still destroyed by bombies, a legacy of war that still exists that will take years to improve. Laos is a substinence farming society, this is the traditional lifestyle. Just because Unicef or whoever decides Laos needs to "improve" is that really the right decision. Sounds like the white man and his globalization rules are what everyone should follow right?
some numbers you mad bro?
Laos has seen GDP growth of over 7.5 percent for the past 10 years thanks to the Party’s wise leadership. Strong and continuous economic growth has helped to free large numbers of people from poverty. At present, only 17 percent of households are categorised as poor.
Annual per capita income now stands at US$1,355, up from just US$114 in 1995 and US$534 in 2006. Laos is now on track to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2015.
The Lao People’s Revolutionary Party was established on March 22, 1955, in the former revolutionary stronghold of Huaphan in the northeast of Laos. The Party was formed to lead the Lao people in repelling the foreign aggressors. The Party played a significant role in leading its armed forces and civilians to liberate the country from foreign domination.
The number of poor families in Laos has dropped to 17 percent, it was revealed yesterday during a review of the implementation of the government’s 7th National Socio-Economic Development Plan.
The Ministry of Planning and Investment presented the mid term review of the 2011-15 socio-economic development plan to Laos’ development partners. One of the highlights was that in the first two and a half years of implementation, there has been a significant decline in the number of poor families
According to the review, the government expects to lower the percentage of poor families even further to 15 percent by the end of this year and to 10 percent in 2015. In 2011, it was estimated that 19 percent of families in the country were poor.
The government has spent about 896 billion kip on its poverty reduction programme and plans to spend 7,387 billion kip from 2011 to 2015.
The dummy above me shows the thinking of most LPDR leaders. No point in reading his post. A part of them still lives in the 60's but yet they LOVE all the finer things in life.
The RLG no longer exist but yet they blame the RLG for all their issues/problems and take no responsibility for anything. They just need an excuse for their hypocritical lives.
So was anything wrong with my post? Was it not the rlg that allowed Laos to be destroyed by bombs? Believe me if the timeline was reversed the rlg would definitely blame the pathet lao for anything bad legacies they had.

Over half of the people in that room have no idea what the Dr is talking about. They're too busy daydreaming thinking about what car they should buy next.
Thongsing Thammavong didn't even finish the 5th grade!! He was handpicked by the Viets. Bouasone pissed off the Viets. But Bouasone had personal issues to tend to and had to step down. His wife found out about all his Mia Nois(mistresses).
Again, Thongsing didn't even finish the 5th grade, and we wonder why Laos is in the condition she is in now.

Of course, because the former kings of Lao had all the education in the world right?
On the opposite side of the argument, your former president George W Bush graduated from Yale and Harvard. Who is more corrupt America or Lao PDR? George W Bush and many other rich kids in America get to graduate from prestigious schools because their parents give $$$.
More girl like gossip from Lao norks . Yes Bouasone was just as bad as those 50 year old Lao nork that come back to Laos to get 20 year old Mia nois and get away from their marriage and life. Don't say that it isn't true because we all know it is. Political affinity has no bearing on how men act in their personal lives. I did support Bouasone as he and I are both pro China.
Here is a very nice article for you comrade. To learn how corrupt your country really is :)
2. That politicians can be bribed to reduce regulation of industries like banking (what is called “regulatory capture”) means that they will be so bribed. Billions were spent and 3,000 lobbyists employed by bankers to remove cumbersome rules in the zeroes. Thus, political corruption enabled financial corruption (in some cases legalizing it!) Without regulations and government auditing, the finance sector went wild and engaged in corrupt practices that caused the 2008 crash. Too bad the poor Afghans can’t just legislate their corruption out of existence by regularizing it, the way Wall street did.
3. That the chief villains of the 2008 meltdown (from which 90% of Americans have not recovered) have not been prosecuted is itself a form of corruption.
4. The US military budget is bloated and enormous, bigger than the military budgets of the next twelve major states. What isn’t usually realized is that perhaps half of it is spent on outsourced services, not on the military. It is corporate welfare on a cosmic scale. I’ve seen with my own eyes how officers in the military get out and then form companies to sell things to their former colleagues still on the inside.
5. The US has a vast gulag of 2.2 million prisoners in jail and penitentiary. There is an increasing tendency for prisons to be privatized, and this tendency is corrupting the system. It is wrong for people to profit from putting and keeping human beings behind bars. This troubling trend is made all the more troubling by the move to give extra-long sentences for minor crimes, to deny parole and to imprison people for life for e,g, three small thefts.
6. The rich are well placed to bribe our politicians to reduce taxes on the rich. This and other government policies has produced a situation where 400 American billionaires are worth $2 trillion, as much as the bottom 150 million Americans. That kind of wealth inequality hasn’t been seen in the US since the age of the robber barons in the nineteenth century. Both eras are marked by extreme corruption.
7. The National Security Agency’s domestic spying is a form of corruption in itself, and lends itself to corruption. With some 4 million government employees and private contractors engaged in this surveillance, it is highly unlikely that various forms of insider trading and other corrupt practices are not being committed. If you knew who Warren Buffett and George Soros were calling every day, that alone could make you a killing. The American political class wouldn’t be defending this indefensible invasion of citizens’ privacy so vigorously if someone somewhere weren’t making money on it.
Over half of the people in that room have no idea what the Dr is talking about. They're too busy daydreaming thinking about what car they should buy next.
It is easy for a CIA informant like Khampheuy to talk but let us see what kind of money he is giving to his family, the type of car he drives, and the house he has. If he is really a true socialist he should not be into such material goods and not take the big suvs and trucks Lao government members are given. Why doesn't he make public his bank account and private goods ownership to show the world that he is the least corrupt in Laos. Trust me he won't
Dr Khampheuy was just as crooked as the rest of the Lao PDR officials. But at least he has some common sense.
He had some common sense. He realized the mistakes they've been making for the past 35+ years. I wonder if he is still alive.
Yawn Amerikkkas attack dogs are still barking. If you Americans fixed your own corrupt system first before continualy yapping about Laos maybe you wouldn't be so bitter.
Laos belongs to all people of Lao ancestry, not just greedy Lao officials.
Lao Nok/Lao Nai are all related. It's the same people. It's only the small percentage of Lao officials that have tried to create a divide between the two and have failed. People still love their families.
Even Chounmaly Sayasone has A LOT of Lao Nok relatives. Khamtai Siphandon treats his Lao Nok relatives like gold every time they visit. All the bull**** they used to talk about Lao Nok in the past means NOTHING to them.
Bounyang Vorachit's granddaughter just married a farang bum. She went to live overseas and met him there. The Vorachit's paid for the whole wedding. It's popular among rich Lao women to marry farang because it's exotic to them. Usually any farang will do, even the poor ones, because the women take care of them anyways. I've seen rich Lao women pay their own dowry when marrying farangs just to show "face" to the other rich Lao families. Sucks how Lao men would have to pay high dowry for these women but some of the farangs get them for free.
A lot of Lao Nok are up to date with all the happenings in Laos because they have relatives in Laos and also visit yearly.

There are a lot of changes happening in Laos right now. Some of the reform minded Lao leaders are paying close attention to current events in Cambodia. Hun Sen is losing sleep and the Vietnamese are certainly not happy that the Khmer people are standing up for themselves. The things happening in Cambodia would never happen in Laos because the majority of the things happening in Cambodia are driven by the youth. In Laos, all the youth are content with living/working in Thailand. If there was no Thailand for the Lao youth to make a living, then Laos would be just like Cambodia. The reform minded Lao leaders also don't have the balls or backing like Sam Rainsy and stay quiet. They're waiting for Mr. Rainsy to succeed before they speak up. They're becoming bolder and bolder. Some of them are pissed off at what happened to Sombath Somphone. He had a lot of influential friends in Laos.

So what is Mr. Rainsy promising in Cambodia? See people keep talking and talking but where is the plan for anything? How do you make Laos non corrupt? Every government type that can or will run Laos in the future will be corrupt. Laos is too small of a country to call its own shots like America or China etc. "democracy" had it's chance when the RLG took over and it failed. The CIA, opium/heroin, and corruption ruined the western style "democracy" for Laos. So I don't know what you people are talking about change this and change that.
You want to take the LPRP out of the picture and you fill it with "Democratic American style leaders"? Where has that shown to succeed in the third world? America marches in and sponsors a coup the country ends up bad and even worse. http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/CIAtimeline.html
I think it is just jealousy and you want your own family to be apart of a new corrupt leadership era honestly. You are mad that your family picked the losing side back in the 60s and want to get back at the Pathet Lao/LPRP. Still having hurt feelings over losing to an ill equipped and underfunded army after you attempted to bomb them to nothing.
While I dislike the corruption in the LPRP I would much rather have a 1 party socialist system then some out of control pseudo democracy (Thailand) or another pseudo democracy (USA) that allows people to think they are in control but really are controlled by a top 1% of the richest.
Peoples democratic dictatorship is a great 1 party system.
Just some of the American backed coups and uprising the list is up there in the link. This is really better then the Lao People's Revolutionary Party?
1957-1973
Laos
— The CIA carries out approximately one coup per year trying to nullify Laos democratic elections. The problem is the Pathet Lao, a leftist group with enough popular support to be a member of any coalition government. In the late 50s, the CIA even creates an "Armee Clandestine" of Asian mercenaries to attack the Pathet Lao. After the CIA抯 army suffers numerous defeats, the U.S. starts bombing, dropping more bombs on Laos than all the U.S. bombs dropped in World War II. A quarter of all Laotians will eventually become refugees, many living in caves.
1959
Haiti
— The U.S. military helps "Papa Doc" Duvalier become dictator of Haiti. He creates his own private police force, the "Tonton Macoutes," who terrorize the population with machetes. They will kill over 100,000 during the Duvalier family reign. The U.S. does not protest their dismal human rights record.
1965
Indonesia
— The CIA overthrows the democratically elected Sukarno with a military coup. The CIA has been trying to eliminate Sukarno since 1957, using everything from attempted assassination to sexual intrigue, for nothing more than his declaring neutrality in the Cold War. His successor, General Suharto, will massacre between 500,000 to 1 million civilians accused of being "communist." The CIA supplies the names of countless suspects.
1973
Chile
— The CIA overthrows and assassinates Salvador Allende, Latin America抯 first democratically elected socialist leader. The problems begin when Allende nationalizes American-owned firms in Chile. ITT offers the CIA $1 million for a coup (reportedly refused). The CIA replaces Allende with General Augusto Pinochet, who will torture and murder thousands of his own countrymen in a crackdown on labor leaders and the political left.
1980
El Salvador
— The Archbishop of San Salvador, Oscar Romero, pleads with President Carter "Christian to Christian" to stop aiding the military government slaughtering his people. Carter refuses. Shortly afterwards, right-wing leader Roberto D扐ubuisson has Romero shot through the heart while saying Mass. The country soon dissolves into civil war, with the peasants in the hills fighting against the military government. The CIA and U.S. Armed Forces supply the government with overwhelming military and intelligence superiority. CIA-trained death squads roam the countryside, committing atrocities like that of El Mazote in 1982, where they massacre between 700 and 1000 men, women and children. By 1992, some 63,000 Salvadorans will be killed.
1990
Haiti
— Competing against 10 comparatively wealthy candidates, leftist priest Jean-Bertrand Aristide captures 68 percent of the vote. After only eight months in power, however, the CIA-backed military deposes him. More military dictators brutalize the country, as thousands of Haitian refugees escape the turmoil in barely seaworthy boats. As popular opinion calls for Aristide抯 return, the CIA begins a disinformation campaign painting the courageous priest as mentally unstable.
If you want to know about Sam Rainsy just follow the news. I'm sure you would call him all sorts of names just because you don't like him. The Khmer people like him and that's all that's important. In Laos your not allowed to like anyone.
You only speak for yourself. Many of the posters on this board know whats going on in Laos. No need to read an article. Everyone sees for themselves. That's why there are no reason to read your novels because it's bull****.
Things are changing fast in Laos and you probably won't like them. You can stay inside your house and look at pictures from the 80's(AiNong era) and enjoy youself while everyone else moves forward. All the bull**** you speak of won't mean ****.

Right, so all you did was ignore my questions and respond with nonsense and bad language. I want you to tell me about Mr. Rainsy since you brought him to the discussion, why is it my job to go research someone I don't care much about. What are his big changes away from the "big bad scary Vietnamese". I do know that his father planned to get rid of Sihanouk but of course the Khmer people aren't allowed to hear that. Rainsy would be thrown to the side if they knew the truth and his goal to further his father's dream of getting rid of the Sihanouk family.
I only speak for myself? Well I am so sorry I am not you and have the privalege to know the "true ideas" of dissident members in the Lao Peoples Revolutionary Party. I am glad you can educate me on how they think.
But it seems like more garbage from lao americans just throwing out gossip. No plan about how to change Laos just barking at the Pathet Lao/ LPRP. If you could please address how this new democracy would fix Laos. I am really interested to hear. I will even join you as a Maoist supporter for your "democracy" movement in Laos. I do not think it is possible, the third world is not allowed to succeed unless they have a hand controlling them like America ie Thailand Indonesia South Korea etc or they were able to take control of neighboring countries. I don't feel like bowing down to America after what they did to Laos and what little they do to fix things. I know you have no reservation calling them your master because your family ran there.
Here are the real stats from one of America's experimental democracy in SE Asia. >Thailand
This is how you want Laos to be ? A multi party plural "democracy" but really nothing gets done. On top of it you have fighting and rioting every other year without the control of a single party socialist government.
This is supposedly one of America's shining beacon of democracy for the "evil and cruel communists" (Laos China Vietnam) of the region.
So please tell me how to change Laos I want to know your plan.
How extreme? Prof Pasuk Phongpaichit did not leave room for doubt about our shamelessly unfair society in her recent keynote speech on "Towards a Fair Society" at the King Prachadhipok Institute conference. Among the glaring facts:
- The top 20% own 69% of the country's assets while the bottom 20% own only 1%.
- 42% of bank savings money comes from only 70,000 bank accounts holding more than 10 million baht. They make up only 0.09% of all bank accounts in the country. In other words, less than 1% of the people own nearly half of the country's savings.
- Among the farming families, nearly 20% of them are landless, or about 811,871 families, while 1-1.5 million farming families are tenants or struggling with insufficient land.
- 10% of land owners own more than 100 rai each, while the rest 90% own one rai or less.
- On income distribution, the top 20% enjoy more than 50% of the gross domestic product while the bottom 20% only 4%.
- The average income of the bottom 20% is the same as the poverty line at 1,443 baht per month.
- The gap between the richest and poorest family is 13 times, higher than all our neighbouring countries.
The first thing in Laos is you can't have a less than 5th grade Lao education running things. At least have a 5th grade Lao education. You have to have qualified people for their respective duties. There is no concrete path for Laos. There's no concrete paths for anywhere. Things change as times change. Flexibility is key in this modern world. You just have to make the best decisions as you go. Currently decisions in Laos are made based on which foreign businesses will give them the most commission. Look at all what's happening to the farmers in Savannakhet and Champasack who are getting kicked out of their lands so Singaporean businesses can lease them long term. Laos has South Korea/Malaysia build golf course/Casinos but they can't build a couple of decent Hospitals for the public to get quality treatment? Most well off Lao go to Thailand for their treatment but expect the poor to go to dirty hospitals.
Most of the Lao PDR officials can care less about the ideologies they preached in the 60's. They only care about business. You and your family are a small minority. You talk **** on places like South Korea but the Lao ministers visited Korea last year and said they wish to learn about development from Korea. Korean officials are also invited to Laos yearly and do seminars for Lao officials. Again, this the them and what they want.
You should go preach your ideologies to all the Lao officials of today. Ask them why they drive Bentleys, Benz, Bmw and why their children live/have businesses in Bangkok and why do their grandchildren to study/live in Aussie or the west.
Coming from a proud Lao who is proud in their heritage, ancestors and culture, i have to say the situation in Laos is sad. Lao in Laos have got to be some of the some of the most immoral, untrustworthy people, backstabbing, conniving, black hearted people i have come across in my world travels.
The original poster/man who asked the question is right. It's a shame the way things are but he is right.
I've tried over and over to try to give people in Laos the benefit of the doubt but it's just too much. People in Laos really need a reality check and they will get a HARD one once the Asean community in implemented next year.

I agree with a lot of what you say trust me. Also I do not support many of the LPRP members anymore because I can see they went off the party line. I consider myself a maoist but thats another topic for another day. I do defend keeping Laos a 1 party state and the LPRP because it symbolized equality, justice, and freedom from colonialism. I hold hope that a new generation of LPRP members will bring new ideals and I was happy to see a new anti corruption deal approved by the United Nations yesterday.
Aren't those first world countries also to blame as well? Would a new government suppose a party or group you support turn down a lucrative deal that the 1st world dangles in front of Laos? It is a tenent of capitalism, buy anyone out with money.
The position and location of Laos is tragic. It is hard for Laos to ever grow properly because it is so small and has no pull in the region. Capitalist or Socialist it will be hard for Laos to grow. I think the correct path for a small nation like Laos is to return back to socialist policies. Build up within the nation, cut the corruption, and care for the well being of the 6 million Lao inside. Laos doesn't have to win economic awards or gain praise for opening its economy it should care only about welfare of the people. If the rich don't care about that type of policy they can leave like what happened 40 years ago. That is what I would do.

I hate to tell you but the people your family left with back in the 1970s were just as black hearted and conniving. After all, they supported the 9 year bombing of Laos by America, Vang Pao's murderous opium trade, and a corrupt RLG.
So it doesn't matter ones political affiliation, it just shows that all humans can be greedy and evil. This was the point of socialism, to rid the world of such evils.
I'm talking about how the people behave. It has nothing to do with RLG or LPDR. I'm talking about good people and bad people. The Asean economic community will have no mercy on anyone. But the Lao PDR officials signed themselves into it and the lazy people of Laos will have to live with it.

Some Lao workers that work in Thailand complain about having to show up to work on time. In Laos people are used to showing up to work 2 hours late and then playing on their phone/tablet all day. Their laziness is real.
People in Laos don't value real education. They rather learn about skin lightening creams, gucci purses and Thai soap operas. The daily education of the daily Lao.
