on my last visit to Laos..  i took the bus from VTE to Savannakhet from Pontong bus station.  we got ripped off!! it was a trip of hell for me...   we bought tickets for bus with A/C.. which we never got...  air fresh all the way down to Savanhnahket and they packed that bus up to the max.  few of the passengers asked the bus driver for A/C and his reply was... it is ON!!

but.. i really enjoy view from the bus..

All tourists from abroad also made complaints alot about Laos buses. No airconditioned and most drivers drive very dangerously fast on narrow roads and around the curves on the mountains.

hmm...no one out there familiar with bus routes within Vientiane capital?

oldbuff, now there are air-con buses on the main routes (e.g. between Luang Prabang & Vientiane, Vientiane & Pakse) & many tourists take them.

personally i prefer non-air con buses in Laos. many khon Lao tend to puke as the bus travels on mountainous roads, really stinks in enclosed aircon space.

Why passengers on Lao buses like to fart inside the bus? No bus has the toilet?

My experience with buses in Laos has been different stories. My bus from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, which was supposed to be an A/C bus, used the A/c for 20 minutes - then switched it off all the way through luang Prabang. It was hell coz we couldn't open the windows. And there was no AIR coming in! We asked the driver but he acted as though he didn't hear any of us.

However, my bus from Luang P to Vang Vieng - a VIP ticket - was a comfortable one, with A/C. The same was true with my bus from Vientiane to Savannakhet. It had an A/C that was soooooo cold it felt like we were at the North Pole. But it was a nice clean bus with an onboard toilet.
