Lao tourism in lack of advertisement and marketing !!!

Laos is now known as an attractive and safe destination in the region and is considered to have great potential for more development. However, the sector’s activities is still inefficient. This is due to the lack of professional marketing and advertisement.

Laos has not yet to set up a national tourism trademark. Even the current slogan “Laos, jewels of the Mekong river” is not powerful enough to attract visitors.

Professor, Doctor  L K Jago, director of the research centre of tourism and hotel of the Victoria University in Australia held that such a slogan is not clear and transparent so it would fail to attract international visitors.

He took the example of other countries with more attractive slogan such as “Malaysia - Truly Asia” , “Uniquely Singapore” or  “Incredible India”.

Images using for advertising the land and people of Laos is not impressive while souvenirs selling at shops are not unique.

It’s reported that Vietnam will spend around VND 16 billion (US $ 1milllion) in late months of the year on advertising tourism on international media.
Last October the image of Vietnam was broadcast on CNN for three months with a 30 second long clip. This cost US $30,000. However, it did not bring a high result as Vietnam’s potential tourists from the Republic of Korea, Japan and China did not see this English channel. While European audiences could not access the information as the it was broadcast on CNN for Asia.

In your idea, what will be the best way to promote Lao tourism?

More than 1.8 m tourisms visited Laos in 2008,do you think the world doesn't know a small land lock Laos?

ok, Let's share about my a little idea about the advertisement

i think ,the internet is the best way to advertise Laos, the most important is how to write well article about Laos on the website.
this website is the government http://www.tourismlaos.gov.la/about-lnta.htm
the information is not so bad, but i think the private sector should work more more on the website to provide more convinent for tourisms...

I was watching a TV show, "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" which he toured Laos. It was the most boring episode so far. Anthony went to Vietnam TWICE. The episode in which Tony pretend to be a spy and travel to Vietnam was hilarious.

I am sure Vietnam have a Ministry dedicate for tourism and staff with competent people. Why can't Laos do the same. I watched the episode and concluded that how Anthony travel around to places, restaurant, shows, and ate, it must have been planned by somebody.

Laos had a chance to show what Laos is when Anthony Bourdain took his show there and Laos goofed.

The number tourists of 1.8 million is small compared with others like Thailand. In Thailand, only the average Japanese tourists traveling to the country every year is around 1 million and this does not count others like the US tourist and other tourist. Therefore, it needs to advertise in a well known TV channel like CNN and BBC or on the bus in foreign countries. Most importantly, Laos needs to have a big airport and the Lao airline should fly world wide.

Lao National Tourism does not invest much money for tourism. It does not promote the attractive sites, does not create the public parks and facilities. It should give the foreign tourists like Thai tourists more days to stay in Laos without passports. The foreign tourists have only 3 days to visit Laos without passports. That is not enough to go to Luang Prabang , Pakse or Xiang Khouang or far beyond.  Laos Tourism Office should create tourist information center in every town and province with the maps of sites of attractions.

1.8 million visitors is too much already for a small country like Laos which has only 6 million people. The more tourists, the more tendency Laos will lost its uniqueness, and people's mind will be wash away.

Believe me biggrin
