Last year, when i arrived in Luang prabang in february, it was a litte bit hard to find a guesthouse with a free room.
Finaly, i found a good ghuesthouse, with really comfortable room (very clean and beautifull, and western standard private bathroom), good location, for 20US$/night. It was quite OK.
This year, i call them to book my room for february again, to be sure i can get a room.... and they ask me 45US$/night! Are they crazy?
More than +100% in one year. I know the value of kip is slightly higher than last year, but +100% (and 45$/night) is for me unacceptable.
Do you know another good GH in luang prabang with room prices arround 20$/night (for a room with double bed)?
because you are foreigner !!! you got $$ thats why, I think I went to Luangprabang 2 years algo and spent 45000 kip per night, it was really nice guest house...
no, in fact i didn't try to book myself, but asked my lao cousin to do it for me (she called them from Vientiane).... so this is not a special price for farang....
Yes, there are two sides with opening country: good and crazy, probably.
One of the crazy things is mentioned by the title of this topic. The more foreigners come, the more expensive for everythings. Unfortunately, the prices are crazy not only for foreigners, though, for Lao people as well.
paris-vientiane: look around on travelfish.org - Laos section.
Wonder about the less well-off Lao nai who need to travel to other parts of the country, how do they find an affordable place to stay?
Like those from rural areas who have to travel to the hospitals in Vientiane capital, if they don't have any friends or relatives there, where can they stay cheaply? Always see patients' relatives sleeping on the floor in the wards & corridors of hospitals there, & whole families sitting under the trees outside.
yes, I think Laos is expensive now,. during my first visit to Loung Prabang around August 2004, I found every thing is so cheap there,. even good guesthouse I could find start from 5 US,. but now cannot I could not find any good guesthouse from 15$ in VT now during my last visit in VT last year,.. I think Laos should reduce a bit more interm of accomodation prices...
prices in and around the tourist hotspot areas like vte and luang praban are going up every year.
pretty soon people will have to move to the country to get away from the crowd, noise, and high prices.

I stayed at Villa BanLao back in 2006. It is nice room and the restaurant is right there. Only problem is.. it is not in the center of town, 5 or 8 mins on jumbo into town.

Paris_VTE,
I highly suggested "Khongsavath Guest House", it is right there in middle of town. The guesthouse lobby/restaurant over look MeKong River. I paid $25 per night. It is really nice guesthouse with AC/sitting toilet/nice shower stall/hardwood floor and very clean.
You can email them at khongsavath@hotmail.com or call them at 011-856-71-212994.
hey i thnk its a good thing that luang prabang is starting to become more expensive... yeahh it wont bring as much tourist but i would rather have our sacred city of luang prabang attend to quality guests instead of quantity guests. we dont want it to end up like sum sort of tourist cheap hot spott.. i for one am glad of the high price hotels..
this will definatly introduce lao as a high luxury vacation destination instead of in search of a cheap thrill like sum other countires.
Sometimes high prices of accommodation and food and transportation will drive tourists away from Laos, even the rich people will not like to come to visit Laos.
